Westinghouse Is Ready Now to Build Ontario’s Economy
Westinghouse’s AP1000® technology generates highly reliable, cost-effective, carbon-free nuclear energy around the world. In Ontario, AP1000 technology would create jobs, generate tax revenue, and support the supply chain, while delivering safe energy to the grid.
Creating High-Skilled Ontario Jobs
For every AP1000 project constructed and operated in Ontario, thousands of jobs would be generated throughout the country. A four-unit AP1000 electrical plant would bring nearly 8,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, with ongoing operation creating approximately 12,000 FTEs and generating $1.7 billion in salaries for Canadians.
Westinghouse is committed to investing in local talent and we take a proactive approach in building our workforce. The adoption of AP1000 design would provide innovative skills development initiatives including cutting-edge nuclear, technical, and leadership training, as well as partnerships with educational institutions. High-skilled roles created through the operation of an AP1000 plant will aid in training over 1,600 local employees, including engineers, chemists, and nuclear technicians.
Boosting Ontario’s GDP and Generating Revenue
A four-unit AP1000 plant in Ontario can power at least three million homes while supporting $28.7 billion in GDP during construction and $8.1 billion in GDP annually in ongoing operations.
For each AP1000 unit we build around the world, Westinghouse can generate nearly $880 million in Canadian GDP through local suppliers. The construction of four AP1000 reactors could generate $7.1 billion in tax revenue, and a potential $2 billion in tax revenue annually throughout operation. At no cost to the taxpayer, this revenue is enough to collectively build five hospitals in Ontario.
Investing in the Ontario Supply Chain
As a Canadian-owned company, Westinghouse is deeply embedded and committed to the Ontario supply chain. Westinghouse has worked closely with Ontario suppliers on components for its AP1000 reactor. With six in operation and over 30 AP1000 units set to be built globally, Westinghouse will provide Ontario firms the opportunity to contribute to these deployments and reap the benefits.
In a province like Ontario, with strong and thriving manufacturing industries, supporting the deployment of AP1000 technology will provide the supply chain with increased access to a global market for large-scale nuclear. AP1000 technology would further strengthen Canada’s nuclear cluster through local procurement, with the majority of total capital expenditure expected to be spent in Canada. Westinghouse currently has more than 12 units contracted worldwide, with the potential to add $12 billion to the Canadian supply chain.
Westinghouse is ready to bring our proven technology to Canada.
