Two weeks after a Supreme Court ruling left the federal government’s environmental assessment system in limbo, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is looking to provide some clarity.
“Tracking investment and supporting major job creation projects in a cleaner, 21st century economy requires regulatory certainty,” Guilbeault told reporters on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Canada’s top court ruled the federal Impact Assessment Act (IAA) was largely unconstitutional and infringed on provincial jurisdiction. While this ruling was just an opinion and the law remains in place, Guilbeault and the feds had committed to introducing targeted amendments that would bring IAA back in alignment with the constitution.
