Ontario Premier Doug Ford is defending comments he made about initially being happy that President Donald Trump won the U.S. election last November, which were caught on a hot mic during a campaign stop on Monday.

"On election day, was I happy this guy won? 100 per cent I was," said Ford in Etobicoke, Ont. "But then the guy pulled out the knife and f--king yanked it into us."

Opposition leaders have since taken aim at the premier over the comments, questioning why he was ever pulling for Trump, who had run on the promise of introducing tariffs against Canada.
