Trudeau unveils $108.5M school nutrition deal with Ontario

Food insecurity remains a pressing issue across the country. Data from Food Banks Canada shows a 90 per cent increase in food bank usage since 2019, with over two million visits recorded in March 2024 alone.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $108.5 million agreement today between the federal and Ontario governments to expand school nutrition programs across the province.

The move is part of the National School Food Program, and the government says it will bring healthy meals to 160,000 more children this school year, with a particular focus on Indigenous communities.

The new funding is expected to save Ontario families with two children approximately $800 annually on grocery bills.
