Skipping Canada-U.S. summit, Ford pushes for border security overhaul, immediate action

Opposition critics have accused Ford of prioritizing his re-election campaign over Ontario’s role in Canada-U.S. negotiations, saying that his absence from the Toronto summit undermines the province’s influence. Ford, however, dismissed such concerns, insisting that federal officials must deliver results rather than engage in more discussion.

PC Leader Doug Ford is calling for immediate action on border security, and criticized the federal government’s response to demands from the Trump administration.

On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a summit in Toronto to discuss Canada-U.S. relations, which Ford skipped to focus on his campaign announcements.

When asked by QP Briefing whether this was an example of the election campaign getting in the way of discussing the province’s best interests, as the opposition has been saying, Ford expressed frustration with what he described as federal inaction, saying that Canada must take decisive steps to address cross-border issues.
