Quebec looking to revive its sole nuclear reactor

When François Legault became Quebec premier in 2018, he met Doug Ford, trying unsuccessfully to convince the Ontario premier to buy Quebec’s then-surplus hydro power rather than refurbishing Ontario’s nuclear reactors.

Much has changed since.

Ontario Power Generation and privately held Bruce Power are pushing ahead with a $26-billion refurbishing plan for 10 existing CANDU reactors, believing they have moved beyond the cost overruns and delays that plagued previous refurbishing efforts at Ontario’s Pickering and New Brunswick’s Point Lepreau nuclear plants.
