The Ontario government will soon announce plans to more than double the income eligibility thresholds for legal aid services, which the province's attorney general says should help ease court backlogs.
The move, which will posted as regulatory measure tomorrow, is expected to allow an estimated 180,000 additional low-income Ontarians to access legal aid and will be made through changes to the regulations for Legal Aid Ontario.
Currently, people must make $19,000 or less to receive representation from a legal aid lawyer.
