Ontario to fund new neonatal unit at St. Michael's Hospital

The announcement comes a day after the Ontario Health Coalition released a report accusing the province of prioritizing private clinics over public hospitals.

Minister of Health Sylvia Jones announced Thursday that the government will support a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at St. Michael’s Hospital.

“A key part of our plan is making critical investments in our hospital and healthcare infrastructure to better connect patients to convenient high quality care in their communities,” Jones said Thursday at the hospital during an event announcing the financial support.

Dr. Tim Rutledge, president and CEO of Unity Health Toronto, who joined the minister for the announcement, heralded the government's investment, saying it will the hospital to "improve the care and health outcomes for babies requiring the highest level of care, and the care experiences of their families."
