Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie says she won't support a motion under consideration by Ontario's big city mayors asking for more teeth to dismantle homeless encampments and involuntary treatment for severe cases of mental health and addiction.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Crombie said there's no need for new powers to deal with those struggling with addictions and mental health issues because there's already a mechanism to allow for involuntary treatment. Under the Mental Health Act, involuntary treatment is permitted through the issuing of Community Treatment Orders (CTO), an order issued by a doctor that requires a person to receive supervised treatment and care in the community.
“The people who want to be treated and beat their addiction can’t even find space for help today, let alone those forced into treatment. Where will they go? What kind of care will they receive?” Crombie asked.
