Ontario’s political parties are set to continue receiving taxpayer-funded support through the provincial per-vote subsidy, which was originally slated to end this year.
The measure is now extended until the end of 2026.
The subsidy, introduced in 2017 by former Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Liberal government, allocates funding to political parties based on the votes they receive in each election. Intended to foster a robust exchange of ideas and reduce reliance on large donations, the subsidy grants 63.6 cents per vote to the parties, which adds up to millions of dollars each year.
