Ontario braces for economic impact of U.S. election as Ford government prepares for possible 'America First' trade policies

Minister of Economic Development Vic Fedeli told reporters at Queen’s Park that “If there’s a repeat of those tariffs, Ontario will be ready with our own,” if the U.S. takes a protectionist turn. Fedeli has said his ministry has “sadly” prepared a list of retaliatory measures in case a trade standoff resumes.

Tonight’s U.S. presidential election will have far-reaching implications for Ontario’s economy and its trade relationship with the United States.

Premier Ford said this Tuesday that the election will be "more consequential than anything else on the horizon to our economy."

While the Ford government braces for the possible return of “America First,” opposition voices urge a measured approach that puts ideology aside for Ontario’s greater good.
