Liberal MPP Adil Shamji joins race for Ontario Liberal leadership

“Career politicians seem to think that only career politicians can be leaders,” said Shamji, who worked as a physician before being elected. “Maybe that's why we're in the situation that we're in right now."

Toronto MPP Adil Shamji on Tuesday officially launched his bid for the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party, joining a crowded field of candidates seeking the job.

“We have a Liberal Party that needs to be renewed and rebuilt,” Shamji said in an interview with QP Briefing. “No one can do things in a more different way than I can.”

Prior to entering politics, Shamji worked as a physician at the Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he ran the hospital’s Enhanced Shelter Support Program, which sought to provide medical care to Toronto’s homeless population.
