Leslie Church wins Liberal nomination for Toronto-St. Paul's

With 2,480 ballots cast, Church defeated Global Affairs Canada senior bureaucrat Emma Richardson, the only other candidate in the race.

Liberals in Toronto-St. Paul's on Wednesday selected Leslie Church to carry the party's banner in a byelection that must take place this year.

With 2,480 ballots cast, Church defeated Global Affairs Canada senior bureaucrat Emma Richardson, the only other candidate in the race. A veteran Trudeau government staffer, Church will look to succeed ex-Liberal cabinet minister Carolyn Bennett as MP for the riding. Bennett stepped down earlier this year and has since been named ambassador to Denmark.

“This is only the beginning,” Church said after winning the nomination.
