Is the government’s target of 1.5 million new homes by 2031 out of reach?

The government hopes that recent changes to federal mortgage policies and the prospect of lower interest rates will revive demand, but housing advocates argue that the challenges run deeper than temporary economic cycles.

Ontario's Fall Economic Statement downgraded housing start forecasts for the next three years, despite the province’s ambitious target of 1.5 million new homes by 2031.

But can the province still achieve this goal? Experts say that without bold policy changes, it’s increasingly unlikely.

According to Bethlenfalvy’s update, housing starts for 2024 are projected at 81,300, marking a consecutive annual decline that leaves the government well short of its yearly target of 125,000.
