With weeks to go until the June 10 mayoral by-election in Mississauga, and 20 candidates officially registered to run to be the city's next mayor, many are watching closely what the outcome of this race could mean for provincial politics.
Mississauga has only had two mayors in the last 45 years, and with a provincial election coming in two years, whoever forms government will have to work to the new mayor in the city.
“The Tories are going to have to work with whoever wins, so whoever works best with them and can row in the same direction is going to be their preferred candidate. And if that individual wins, that'll be a lot easier for them in the region, especially given the divisions between Mississauga and Brampton in the past,” said Will Wuerh, Liberal strategist.
