Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) Leader Doug Ford said he believes recent efforts from Canada's premiers are helping convince U.S. lawmakers that tariffs would be destructive to both countries' economies.
During a campaign stop in Ottawa on Tuesday, Ford touted his recent trip to Washington D.C., alongside Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, where the duo attended the National Governors Association. It was Ford's second trip to the U.S. capital in as many weeks, as all 13 premiers travelled south of the border earlier this month, where they met with high-level staffers in U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.
Trump has promised to introduce a blanket 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods, as well as a 10 per cent levy on Canadian energy. The tariffs were originally scheduled to take effect on Feb. 4, but Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau negotiated a 30-day pause, in exchange for further Canadian policy action on the Canada-U.S. border.
