Crombie pledges 10 per cent cap on international students, calls current model a “Ponzi scheme”

With Ontario already bracing for a nearly $10 billion deficit in 2024-25, Crombie’s proposed cap raises some eyebrows regarding how an Ontario Liberal government would replace lost tuition revenue while ensuring colleges and universities remain financially viable.

Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie has pledged to cap international student enrolment at 10 per cent for all colleges and universities across the province, calling the current post-secondary funding model unsustainable.

Speaking in Toronto this Tuesday, Crombie criticized Doug Ford’s government for failing to properly fund education, forcing post-secondary institutions to rely heavily on international student tuition.

“What we have right now is not a sustainable model,” Crombie said. “In fact, that’s a Ponzi scheme.”
