The Ontario Liberals are proposing a new bill that would require the provincial transit agency to ensure some affordable housing is built on land they sell to private developers.

It would also mandate Metrolinx to coordinate transit with local bike share programs, set maintenance standards for Northern Ontario highways and reinstate disclosure requirements for short-line railways.

Party leader Bonnie Crombie said the bill is called the Smart Ontario Act because it includes "common sense measures," and while she would like to see it pass (or at least some of its measures), she wants to make it clear to the public where the Liberals stand on key issues ahead of the 2026 election.
