MPP salaries to rise by 35 per cent, and pension benefits are back under new legislation

The government says that if MPP salaries had been increased by inflation each year since 2009 when they were frozen, this would have resulted in a 43 per cent increase by 2025, which is higher than the proposed 35 per cent hike.

The Ford PCs are introducing legislation to give MPPs a 35-per-cent pay hike as well as new pension benefits.

The bill would lift the over 15-year-old freeze on salaries, bringing up base pay for MPPs to $157,350 and tying the rate to 75 per cent of what MPs in Ottawa make. That's currently $209,800.

MPPs sit far less often than their federal counterparts. In 2024, MPs sat for 123 days, compared to 75 for MPPs, who also don't sit on Fridays. That means MPPs sit for around 60 per cent time that MPs do.
